What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) ?
PRP is a treatment used to accelerate healing in various areas of the body. Platelets are a component of blood, along with red and white blood cells. When a person sustains a cut or wound, the platelets are the first to arrive at the injured site and stop bleeding and promote healing. It is theorized that if one could extract concentrated platelets and inject them into damaged areas of the body, healing could potentially be accelerated. PRP contains a wide variety of growth factors and proteins that speed tissue repair.
It is widely believed that PRP can prevent hair loss and enhance hair growth. Our physicians typically use this treatment when hair loss results from androgenetic alopecia, a common condition that causes hair follicles to shrink and get damaged. PRP can help regrow hair by reversing the process that occurs in androgenetic alopecia.
Since PRP has become a popular method of healing damaged hair follicles, physicians have used it to treat injuries to the tendons, muscles and ligaments. An example would be to treat those suffering from sports injuries. Although we are only offering PRP for hair restoration at this time, we will be offering PRP injections for knees and shoulders in the future.
